Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. –
‘The Magical Place’ Review
On our last date with S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson was abducted by the bad guys, May and Ward were DTF on the DL, Skye was still on Mission Find Mommy and Fitz-Simmons was used for comic relief. Not to mention, my personal favorite after Coulson, Mike Peterson was not only the reason Coulson was abducted, he was blown up and possibly dead. Yes, I know Mike Peterson isn’t a full-fledged member of Team S.H.I.E.L.D., but I hope he will be.
This week, S.H.I.E.L.D. brought us to ‘The Magical Place’ and it was pretty magical. I’m just not sure if it was sexy or scary magic.
New Years Resolution …Get Coulson Back
Agent Victoria Hand is back and she considers S.H.I.E.L.D. priorities to be 1) defeat centipede and 2) get Coulson back. Yes, in that order. Coulson’s team isn’t really happy about that though.
I’ll be honest, if it had been another agent that was missing, maybe the tension about Coulson being held hostage would have been more, well tense. Since Coulson is the show’s most popular character and I knew he wasn’t in jeopardy, Hand’s insistence that they put the mission first seemed a bit harsh. And confusing, considering what we learn later about Coulson and Tahiti.
The lack of worry about Coulson did mean that I was able to give my full attention to the team’s reactions. Though Ward was shocked at May agreeing with Hand that Skye shouldn’t be involved in S.H.I.E.L.D. business, I wasn’t. May and Coulson have a good relationship, she wants him back and she knows Skye works best outside the system. Of course she wants her off the plane. Not to mention that whole complicated resentment thing May has going on about Skye’s search for her family. Still, it will be interesting to see if May’s chill with Skye causes temperatures to drop between her and Ward in the bedroom. That would be sad, they’re kinda hot together.
It was nice to see Fitz-Simmons and Ward come together in helping Skye ditch S.H.I.E.L.D. and go off on her own. It shows how far they’ve come, considering Ward didn’t trust her at all for awhile and Fitz-Simmons was leery.
What Happens in Tahiti…
Despite Director Fury’s desires, Tahiti isn’t Vegas and we finally do learn the truth about what happened to Coulson after his run in with Loki in New York.
Unsurprisingly, Coulson is able to withstand most of the torture Po puts him through. He’s S.H.I.E.L.D. Level 8 after all, a simple a painful MRI scan, knowledge that he was cold and without brain function after New York and having the bad guy point out that his personal motivations (trying to save Peterson and his son because Coulson watched his own father die) isn’t going to cause him to crumple.
Raina, however, isn’t Po. She knows that they won’t be able to break Coulson with torture, he’s survived too much. The mysterious Clairvoyant agrees and kills Po, leaving Raina to pick up the reigns of Operation What Happened to Coulson. Armed with knowledge of Coulson’s desire for family, she rubs it in that his S.H.I.E.L.D. family has been betraying and lying to him since New York, even after he gave up his chance at normal life with the cellist.
While he’s able to refrain from spilling everything to Raina, even Coulson can’t fight that pain. Tahiti the magical place is no more, thank God.
Skye Cracks the Case…Again
It was obvious that Skye was going to be a big player in getting Coulson back because she’s a bit of the plot-device-savior and well the entire team showed their trust in her (even if she doesn’t realize May was doing that). We’ve been here before, we’ll be here again and I wasn’t that interested. The gist was she followed the money, pretended to be Agent May for the tactical stuff and team S.H.I.E.L.D. apprehends Raina. Good for Skye.
It would have been more interesting if it had been anyone else.
So what did Coulson discover? Well, just as we assumed, Coulson was dead after New York. Fury had doctors working on him around the clock until they could bring him back, but sadly, what they brought back was a shell of the man Coulson was; he had no will to live. So they poked and prodded literally — and the imagery the show gave us, Coulson with half his skull missing, electronic shocks being sent into his brain as he begs for death is interesting – until Coulson became the man he is today. By his own admittance, that man is different than the agent he was in New York. Softer.
So what does this mean for Coulson? Is he now the man he should have been, with access to emotions he turned off in order to turn into the super agent who put S.H.I.E.L.D.’s needs first? Or is he something else entirely? Does he exist at all or is he just a creation of S.H.I.E.L.D.? And will Fury be happy with that creation, who is so concerned with bringing in someone like Skye and her emotional psyche?
The other magical truth is that Mike Peterson lives another day. He’s not so pretty anymore, but who would be after surviving a bomb like that? And really, if S.H.I.E.L.D. can make Steve Rodgers go from scrawny to sexy and bring Coulson back to life, they should certainly be able to make Peterson pretty again, right?
Unfortunately, he’s being held by the mysterious Clairvoyant and has been implanted with that self destructive camera thing that will kill you if you don’t follow out Team Bad Guys orders.
Team Coulson has disabled one of those before, but I’m still a bit worried for Peterson. He did betray them and get Coulson abducted, even if it was to save his son, and I’m not sure Coulson’s new family is going to be very forgiving.
This show could use more real tension though, so I’m not complaining.
‘The Magical Place’ took a grown up turn, playing love and betrayal, and upped the ante. We finally know what happened to Coulson and it’s not good. What is it about him that had Fury breaking the rules; as Agent Hand pointed out all episode, he was just a Level 7 agent in New York. How will he cope with figuring out who he is while guiding the team’s identity? Will Ward and May’s cold front thaw out or is Skye’s parental drama going to cause them more problems. Will Fitz-Simmons ever get a story that doesn’t involve making quips and being comic relief? Please! They’re so adorable! And just what is in store for Mike? Can he be redeemed or is he about to go down a road he can’t return from? Head over to the forum, or leave us a comment, and let us know you’re thoughts!
