Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD 01.03 Review – ‘The Asset’

Third dates are kind of a big deal. It’s not quite the do you go to bed together moment that romantic comedies lead you to believe every third date is, but it definitely puts you on the road to commitment. With Tuesday nights being full of sexy options (The Originals has those sultry vampires, sexy doctors run the halls of The Mindy Project and Chicago Fire smolders with those firefighters) it was important to ‘The Asset’ to lock us down. Leave it to S.H.I.E.L.D. to use science and evil genius to secure our hearts.

Ian Quinn, CEO Quinn Worldwide and
Evil Genius

DAVID CONRADS.H.I.E.L.D. unveiled a big bad this episode that will probably have his hands in a few pies this season. He’s everything that makes a girl swoon for a bad boy: tall, dark, sexy, filthy rich and has a bit of a Robin Hood/politician thing going on (he gives a lot of his ill gotten gains to charity). Ian Quinn is a believer in free information, especially when it allows him to make a lot of money off the work of others, such as Dr. Franklin Hall, a Bill Nye the Science Guy type who used to teach Fitz and Simmons and is a current red level asset for S.H.I.E.L.D. When Dr. Hall is being moved to a new location by S.H.I.E.L.D, Quinn intercepts communications and kidnaps the good doctor using invisible forces that Fitz and Simmons could only understand.

Team S.H.I.E.L.D. makes quick work of deducing who has the good doctor, but unfortunately, Quinn is also a big believer in protection. Not only does he have armed guards, but he’s now a citizen living in a country that S.H.I.E.L.D. can’t enter due to international laws.

Lucky for them, Skye isn’t an agent and can go anywhere she wants. She quickly gets herself an evite to Quinn Worldwide’s shareholders meeting via some hacker tricks.  Like Ward, we all wonder if we can trust Skye’s ability to be the cavalry.

It’s Not a Party Until Someone Jumps
Out a Window

Shield - Coulson 1While Skye makes small talk with Quinn, a two man S.H.I.E.L.D team will break international law to rescue the good doctor. Two man because Agent May points out that she’s not about to go back into the field, which mean Coulson suits up. Yup, even in combat Coulson goes with Brooks Brothers…can anyone else picture Agent Coulson and Barney Stinson (of How I Met Your Mother) trading suit sources and tailor names?

Armed with some S.H.I.E.L.D gadgets from Fitz and Simmons (my favorite being the compact that allows Skye to touch up her make-up and allow Team Smarty Pants to save the day via wireless connection), Skye makes her way into the party. With Agent May playing her Cyrano, Skye charms everyone and scores a job offer with Quinn Worldwide. I bet the benefits are awesome. Unfortunately, she hasn’t gotten to stealth training yet and is caught trying to break into Quinn’s office by Quinn himself.
